TEWZ 1 (b. 1980, Chicago)

TEWZ 1 is a painter, writer, and street artist currently living in Chicago.  His work is the visual byproduct of the random sights and sounds experienced every day in the city. He began his public art career as a graffiti writer in the early 90’s.  During his journeys he began taking photos of the places he painted:  along rooftops, underneath bridges, inside abandoned buildings, and freight yards.  His travels have led him from the Chicago to London to San Francisco to Austin and everywhere in between:  Westbourne Park, the Cal train, N Judah tunnels, the Dog Patch, the blue line tunnels…..  Years later, after realizing the limitations of standard graffiti, he began experimenting with alternative methods of manipulating the urban landscape to broaden his audience.  He is widely known for rescuing the free plastic newspaper boxes commonly found on sidewalks at busy intersections, physically transforming them, and returning them to the street with fellow Chicago artist IKIL in a project dubbed MONSTER BOX.  In addition, he paints live at several bars and clubs in Chicago and has been featured in gallery shows throughout Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, and Dallas. TEWZ currently teaches art at the South Chicago Art Center. He studies visual communications and printmedia at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago and is a recipient of the Presidential Merit Scholarship.

My work is the visual commentary of my experiences living in Chicago.  Trains in the distance, police, the homeless, traffic, concrete, crack heads, steel, broken glass, restaurants, rats, businessmen, bars, liquor stores, old buildings, street musicians.  Every day I walk out my door, my senses are bombarded until I return.  Sometimes it’s sad, sometimes its funny, and once in a while it’s even beautiful.  I take it all in like a camera and then process it later.  I get completely filled with all of this shit and I can’t do anything except let it out.  It’s involuntary.  It comes when it comes. I can’t force it and I don’t have a choice. I paint in the vernacular, so I guess that makes my work low art. Sometimes it's high art, but then it gets a little uncomfortable cuz it rather be on some bricks behind a dumpster in some shady part of town.
